Tech Transition

The newest line of effort within AFWERX is a team of experts charged with ensuring the Department of the Air Force end-users exploit the value that AFWERX and Small Business provide to the warfighter. The team assists small businesses in overcoming the “Valley of Death,” helps operational units tackle complex technical challenges, and supports program officers in contracting the most effective solutions for their needs.

About

Tech Transitions focuses on helping Airmen, Guardians, and contract awardees overcome common challenges in transitioning technology. We achieve this by offering educational support, providing valuable resources, and connecting innovators with subject matter experts.

Transition Barriers

Transition barriers are processes and procedures that the Department of the Air Force has established to ensure adopted programs have undergone the necessary rigor and testing to be resilient on the modern battlefield.

One of the biggest challenges that innovators face is knowing what the requirements are and how to start satisfying them.

Some examples of these barriers include:

  • Risk Management Framework (RMF)
  • Spectrum Management
  • Human-Subject Research (HSR)
  • Airworthiness
  • Test and Evaluation – Security Clearances

Currently, the AFWERX team is solely focused on providing Airmen, Guardians, and contract awardees with resources to address and overcome the challenges with RMF.

What is the RMF and Why Do We Use It?

The Risk Management Framework is a structured approach used to manage and oversee risk for an enterprise.

The governing regulation for this is Air Force Instruction (AFI) 17-101

All users are urged to review the AFI in its entirety to gain familiarity with the process and requirements.
